VOX POPULI
New Jersey Center for Visual Art, Dec 2007 - Jan 2008

vox populi is a piece about longing. It strives to both celebrate and dismantle the unseen cushion we place between ourselves and others as we move through populated spaces.  In this installation, words and phrases were taken from conversations overheard and recorded anonymously inside the site where the piece was installed, and from the community living in close proximity to the site.  These words were painted in subtle, barely noticeable colors onto the walls of the art center's main stairwell, a transitional space typically moved through rather than lingered in. The phrases were removed from their original contexts and layered to create any number of potential new meanings, while operating visually out of the corner of one’s eye.  The state of anonymity is a point of departure, a tool through which observations are made based on pure conjecture and fantasy.
