We are a team of a writer/poet and a visual artist who has been releasing art-related projects since November 14, 2003. For Cracks in the Pavement we produced 1,000 sharpened pencils embossed with a haiku encouraging the finder to use the instrument to communicate his/her feelings in words or drawings. With the advent of the personal computer, we find that fewer and fewer people communicate in writing or drawing with implements. We also feel that the hand/mind connection from hand-held tools has a deeper, more personal impact on the user. Receiving a handwritten expression - a message or viewing a drawing – we believe, is a direct reciprocating action between individuals that is becoming scarce in contemporary culture.
