Technology and nature exist as two dynamic opposites each working against one another. The lack of consideration for a synthesis of the technological pursuit and the natural environment has proven to be the real problem though. Without hesitation the pursuit of technology advances for better or worse, and as society has chosen to hold its technological achievements as its great legacy, abandonment of these enterprises is not an option. Society tries to hide the ugly side effects of technological advancement out of sight from the people who enjoy the benefits, but as the need grows even greater the elements of the man-made world are beginning to cover up what remains of the natural beauty in the environment. Electrical power lines, dams, highways, and wireless communication towers all serve the daily needs of the public in a variety of useful ways, however, have the desires of necessity outweighed the need for real artistic beauty in the everyday lives of the people on this planet? Either way the people have chosen to live with these objects. Can society find a balance between its technological advances and the disruption of the natural landscape?

In this Wiesbaden Chapter we propose to bring the man-made elements from the city into the forest and from the forest we will bring back natural elements into the city. It is from these elements, natural and man-made, that we draw inspiration to create works of art. Sounds from nature mingling with sounds from the city along side with a new way to visualize the often stark landscape that civilization has created. With the use of sound and image we propose to fuse these two opposing factors together, a weaving of the most easily defined beauty that is nature and the often ignored beauty of the man-made world.

Placed in each of these opposing landscapes will be a work of art and an accompanying sound composition. The work will consist of the work will consist of elements found in both the city and the natural landscape. A map will play an important role in the artwork citing a given area where the sounds were collected for each composition. The imagery will further support these ideals. It is our hope that the discoverer will perhaps go on a little journey to the given location presented in each artwork to enjoy their own adventure within the landscape, perhaps a new area of exploration, one that the individual knew existed but has possibly forgotten about over time. In addition, a visit to the Cracks in the Pavement web site will help further the exploration on a global scale in realms both virtual and real, natural and man-made. This is for the pathfinders, the seekers, and the wanderers.
